My relationship with writing…

I believe that anybody can be a writer if they have some basic knowledge of common literacy. However, I also believe that not every writer can be a good writer. My writing capabilities come into use during school, application writing, and communication. Most of my academic writing ability is used for essays in English, write-ups for the Chemistry lab, and writing emails to a professor or colleague. In regards to writing for applications, proper literacy is a must for different application questions. Why would we hire you? What makes you a good candidate for this position? All of these questions require good grammar, punctuation, and spelling technique. I write often to build these skills and prove to employers that I am well educated in the realm of communication and literacy. Personally, I do not love writing. I believe that writing is a crucial skill that I need to be successful, but I personally do not enjoy the physical process of typing on a keyboard and desperately trying to find a word count. However, I enjoy a different kind of writing. I love writing music. Whether is lyrics to songs, composing melodies, or writing out chords, I love literacy combined with music. In music class senior year, my teacher made me write a critic review on a classical piece that he played. As we listened we wrote things that we enjoyed about the song, but also things we didn’t like. My New Visions Honors Program instructor Phyllis Lares has inspired me to keep writing. She helped me develop a structure for my essays, improve my grammar, increase my vocabulary range- not to mention she helped me make my first cover letter that I used to apply for my first job.

  • I find it really interesting that you write music. What was your first piece like? What kind of music do you like to produce?

    1. My first piece that included lyrics and music was in my IB music class senior year and it was called Living on the Threshold of Tomorrow. Mostly contemporary stuff. However, I can play the drums, and my brother plays electric guitar, so sometimes we jam out with some Metallica lol.
